In the past we have endorsed many things; in the future we shall support many others.

the sublimation of memory.

Even though we usually discuss anime & other artifacts of Japanese pop culture, I noticed the Onion was discussing The Triplets of Belleville, and I had to get in on that.

Or do I? I watched it maybe four years ago, and I scarcely remember it. I liked it, I know that much. I admired its animation, enjoyed its soundtrack, felt bathed in its surreal atmosphere and diffusely old-fashioned glow. It was a good film, I feel confident saying that much.

I remember the boy who became a cyclist, and the horse-noises they played whenever he appeared on screen. I remember the old lady, the main character, being described as "shaped like a jam-pot". I remember the wheel-truing scene. Perhaps I remember the Triplets, a little bit, but I could not tell you what they did or what they looked like, or why the dog figures so prominently in this review.

I'm sure if I watched it again I would remember, and maybe even keep remembering, this time. But, on the other hand, there are always new things to see, and perhaps my subconscious knows what I like better than I do.

This week they'll discuss Kon's Millennium Actress -- another film that I watched, enjoyed a great deal, and have forgotten almost completely. No doubt I had my reasons, I say to myself, and imagine what it must have been like.
