In the past we have endorsed many things; in the future we shall support many others.

my hobby: watching television.

Been watching Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. (It's okay. Does some clever things. Handicapped by cheap animation. I'll have more to say about it when I've seen the whole thing, I think.)

But what really strikes me is just how time-consuming watching this stuff is. It's really kind of overwhelming. And I know people, or used to know people, who've seen all of Naruto and Bleach. Devoted watchers of Inuyasha. I have trouble even imagining it.

I'm not saying here that watching anime is a waste of time -- for example, just recently I re-watched all of Utena, purely because the series is incredible. I've been watching stuff at a decent clip lately, and enjoying it. But I think lots of people -- the ones who want me to do things, at any rate -- would condemn me for it. I can't work all the time, though.

Besides, this is what makes us otaku. The hobby demands that we spend a certain amount of time familiarizing ourselves with the territory. Internalizing these works -- it's practically part of the definition. It's kind of silly, but we signed up to enjoy pop culture, and enjoy it we shall, at length and in detail. I only get really angry at it when I'm watching stuff that's mediocre by genre standards.

Thankfully, it doesn't happen very often, and when it does, I can shrug and think to myself that I had it coming.
