The current Endless Eight arc of Haruhi reminds me a good deal of Family Guy.

For those of you who are unaware, Family Guy is an American cartoon series noted for its tendency to elaborate jokes prolonged well past reason, often to such an extent that they cease to be funny, make the audience uncomfortable, and then become funny again. It also makes many references to pop culture.

I think this is the part of the arc where they expect you be bored, before that disbelieving "they can't possibly still be doing this" reaction sets in. They'll play with you a bit, change the episode timing a little, but overall this one felt more lighthearted. I enjoyed the clock motif -- anime doesn't break the fourth wall often enough for that kind of thing to be annoying.

They're playing with us, you know? Reminding us that they control the horizontal and the vertical. Like I said, mad with power.
