Okay, so having established that
I like Dennou Coil, the question arises: why don't other people? I can't be sure why, of course, but I do have some ideas.
First, it's unarguably slow. I think that this is because of its wide emotional range -- to show the characters in a variety of situations, the producers have to devote a certain amount of time to slice-of-life episodes. Also, the series is realistic, and kid's lives are not in reality very interesting when seen from outside.
So yes, it's slow, but I think complaints like that are on par with demanding more compression in audio recording. It's slow in places to give the fast parts meaning. It's as slow as it needs to be to preserve its dynamic range. Maybe another director could have paced it better, but I wouldn't bet on it.
The other issue that I've heard -- and this one annoys me considerably -- is that the animation style is too cartoony. As an anime fan, you've already learned to adjust to incredible levels of abstraction. Deal with it. If the style reminds you of a kid's show -- tough. Some properties are substantiative, some are not.
One more thing is that it might not be good for groups. It's a pretty personal series for me. Makes me introspective, even the funny parts. So I've never had much luck watching it with friends. But I am one of nature's born curmudgeons, so I can forgive it that.
