In the past we have endorsed many things; in the future we shall support many others.

the lure of the intrinsically terrible.

Today, it appears, was "Goya honoring day" at the LA County Museum of Art. Not the Spanish artist, although that would have been a fine choice as well, but rather the bitter melon. (Today because it's May 8th, "go" and "ya", you see.) Sadly, no actual bitter melon was in evidence, which I felt was kind of unfair, especially compared to 2006's event.

Based on the description, it's no surprise that I've never heard of the fruit in my life. From the website: "The bitter melon grows in tropical and subtropical climates. The name 'bitter' comes from the bitter taste of this vegetable, considered the most bitter among all edible vegetables." My curiosity is piqued.

I've got a button. It's ugly, but somehow charming for its clumsy directness. To tell the truth, I'm even thinking of going to LACMA in a couple of months, to see their bitter melon trellis when it opens.
