A thread at the DrMaster Forums indicates that Iron Wok Jan will be continued, Bride of Deimos will be discontinued, and that they will continue Crayon Shin Chan whenever the anime gets a tv broadcast. • Shogakukan To Publish Aya Ueto Monogatari
The adapted story of real life Japanese actress Aya Ueto which tracks the secret life behind her career path from debut to stardom will be published in manga form by Shogakukan. "Aya Ueto Monogatari" serializes in Shoujo Comic Magazine (sold biweekly) with the first volume in No. 8 on the 19th. The title appears on the cover. Part 2 will see a street release with No. 9 sold on April 5. The filming of the movie Azumi which opened in May '03 will be the focus first story installment. According to Shogakukan, Shoujo Comic's largest demographic of readers are females in high school. When they polled readers on their favorite popular entertainer Aya Ueto's name was a clear favorite.

• Shueisha Brings Manga Settings To Life
The Shueisha girls' comics magazine event "Comic Party" has kicked off in Shibuya at Parco SR6 on Friday. Scenenery settings based on original ones found in the manga series NANA (dressing room), Hachimitsu To Kuroba and Love Con projected on to a screen where visitors can interact. Likewise a "Wall Scribbling System" will present so that particpants can leave their mark on the wall of the nightclub. Related products will also be sold such as reproduction manuscripts and postcards. Life-size character figures from Love Con will be on display. Entrance is free, the event runs through April 12th.

• Classic Tezuka Disney Manga To Be Reprinted
Osamu Tezuka's 1951-52 circa Bambi and Pinocchio manga originally published in Manga Shonen by Gakudo Sha are headed for their first reprint in Japan in more than 50 years. The copyright holder Disney company has permitted the release, they recently marketed the DVD version of Bambi in the USA. The originals which were never reprinted after the initial sale have since taken on the value of several hundred thousand Yen in the secondhand book market. Disney is said to have permitted the reprint due to the work's cultural meaning. The Tezuka researcher Noguchi Fumio, who owns the best preserved originals known to exist, provided his copies which were scanned into computer editing program and digitally cleaned up. The result provides the master for this new release will sale as a single-unit at 3800 Yen (excluding tax) by Kodansha on April 10.

• Ruling Against 2CH For Unauthorized Manga Reprint
The manager of the famous Japanese BBS 2ch was ordered to pay compensation in an appeal hearing before the by the Tokyo High Court after it was found that coprighted manga work was reprinted without permission by a user online. A lawsuit was filed by Miyuki Kitagawa and Shogakukan requesting compensation for damages of three million Yen from the manager of of the bulletin board. The presiding jusge mentioned "There is an obligation to correct promptly if the manager commited piracy". An order was made for the payment of 1.2 million yen in total. The original hearing before the Tokyo District Court ended in the dismissal of the lawsuit stating "It was the user /poster that violated the copyright and not the manager of the bulletin board".

• Gankutsuou Manga Announced
The manga version based on GONZO's Gankutsuou (Count of Monte Cristo) TV animation has been announced to run in Afternoon. Series Director Mahiro Maeda will pen the comic based on the story drafted by Arihara Yura. Gankutsuou is based on the original novel by Alexandre Dumas. Details were published in the April issue of "Monthly Afternoon" released on February 25.

• First Look: Star Wars Cine-manga
StarWars.com has posted the first images from a trilogy of Cine-Manga books from Tokyopop adapting the original Star Wars films. The Cine-Manga series takes popular films and anime and digitally freeze-frames the actual moving image, breaks it out into comic-style panels in a lively and innovative layout, and peppers the action with manga-style text balloons and sound effects. For the first time, the Star Wars saga is getting the Cine-Manga treatment, and there's no better place to start than with the films that started it all. These digest-sized books are due out this spring and are exclusive to the UK, Germany and Japan. More Cine-manga books are on their way, including the Clone Wars and the prequel trilogy.

Broccoli Books, the company known for localizing the popular manga series Aquarian Age ? Juvenile Orion, has announced that they have acquired the publishing rights for the series KAMUI. The first volume of KAMUI is slated to be released in Summer 2005. KAMUI is a fantasy-action shoujo manga series by Shingo Nanami and published by Square Enix in Japan. • Manga Shoplifting Lawsuit
A female office worker who allegedly shoplifted 15,000 Yen worth of manga from a bookstore in Tokyo got an unsuspected surprise when besides criminal charges she was slapped with a lawsuit for the purported theft. The plantif were was asking for 230,000 Yen or more in the judgement, however a settlement was reached to the tune of 70,000 Yen was announced on Friday in Japan. This is the first instance in Japan in which a bookstore has used a lawsuit of this type in crime prevention of shoplifting. The female office worker reportedly stole at least 38 comic books and was selling them off to second-hand bookshops. Damages to bookstores in Japan stemming from shoplifting equal about 2.1 million Yen a year according to a nationwide investigation of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2002.

• 2nd Dr.Koto Shinryoujo Series
Dr. Koto Shinryoujo (Dr. Koto's Clinic) has boomed in Japan recently. The story, based on the manga by Takatoshi Yamada was made into a popular TV drama in 2003 which was shown on Fuji Television starring Yoshioka Hidetaka Takashi and Shibasaki Kou. In 2004 Koto took the Shogakukan Manga Award in General Category. Thursday it was revealed in Japan the second series is to begin in Weekly Young Sunday Magazine No.13. In the story, Koto leaves behind his former girlfriend, an obstetrician-gynecologist at a university hospital in Tokyo, to take this job and she cannot fathom why Koto, a fairly skilled surgeon, would want to practice in the Pacific. The work has been responsible for a recent medical themed manga boom in Japan.

• First Obscenity Judgement Against Manga
In a landmark ruling in the Japanese court system, the first judgment stemming from obscenity charges has come down against a manga. The key figure in the case is Motonori Kishi (54) who first started his publishing company Shobunkan in 1968. He was arrested pending the release of his manga Honey Room, the charge being distributing obscene material. Tokyo's District Court found Kishi guilty on January 13, sentencing him to one year in prison and suspension for three years. The verdict has the adult rich comics industry in Japan in quite a nervous state. Ashita No Joe mangaka Tetsuya Chiba appeared in court as a defendant side witness. According to the testimony of A Tokyo Metropolitan Police inspector, the investigation was started based on a memo from LDP Diet member Katsuei Hirasawa. The defendant's side argued that charge violated the constitution that secures the freedom of expression. An appeal is currently underway and a hering is scheduled for March 17th.
