So somehow, I was still unconvinced about completely giving up film and working only with my digital camera. Granted, I had worked with mainly just my digital camera for the last year or so, and had pain over the idea of having to pay for film & film processing again. However, with the pictures that Loy had taken at Anime Expo, as well as a few other pictures I had seen from the con shot on film, my curiousity had been piqued again. Could I take pictures as good or better than the digital camera on the old style equipment?
The end results are presented here. Overall, my opinion is mixed. Fewer of the pics I shot using the film came out than the ones with digital, and it's compounded by the fact that I only was able to shoot 2 rolls of film during the con, compared to about 1300 digital shots. However, when the shots came out well, they came out really well. There's a certain quality about film shots that is very hard to replicate in digital shooting, even with strong photoshopping, without some very high end equipment, like a good digital SLR with a good lens to complement. And while maybe some of these shots could be done in digital, it would either require significant quantities of post-processing, or very expensive digital equipment.
I'll probably end up bringing more film to the next con, since it seems I don't feel totally comfortable giving up film completely at the moment.
Equipment: Nikon F SLR, 50mm f/1.4 Nikkor lens.
